Okavango Delta  - Botswana

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is unique. It is the largest inland delta in the world. Instead of flowing into the sea, the annual flood of fresh water flows inland, spreading over 15 000km² of the Kalahari sand in a maze of lagoons and channels. The Delta is accessed by air or road through Maun.

The countless islands that emerge from its waterways give rise to several diverse ecosystems which in turn, are home to vast numbers of game and a myriad of birds. The crystal clear waters support many kinds of fish and it is a birder’s paradise. This popular attraction is at its most impressive in August when the champagne-coloured water is at its deepest. Most of the young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush.

Moremi wildlife reserve

In the centre of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, a 3,000 km2 paradise. Proclaimed a wildlife reserve by the Tswana people in 1963, Moremi is undoubtedly one of the world's most beautiful wilderness areas. The foresight of the local community has ensured that nature's web has flourished undisturbed, a veritable Garden of Eden offering a glimpse of the divine. Moremi is a place of lily-covered wetlands, grass plains and forests, where even at the busiest time of year you're likely to be the only spectators at even the most dramatic animal sighting.

As Moremi is a fenced reserve game viewing is impressive throughout the year. The cool, dry winter months from to March to September are an ideal time to visit, as you are practically guaranteed sightings of lion, elephant, leopard, hyena, eland, kudu, antelope, giraffe, zebra, impala and buffalo. On the sandy riverbanks and wetlands, sightings of hippos and crocodiles are common place.

Moremi is accessed either by air or road via Maun, Botswana's tourism capital. However, the maze of sandy roads that takes you to Moremi South Gate deteriorate once inside the reserve and vary from deep sandbanks to potholed detours. A self-drive through Moremi is advisable only for experienced 4x4 drivers and only in the dry months. There are three serviced campsites in the reserve, all of which are unfenced, and as the animals frequently prowl for scraps in the dead of night you'll feel that you are in the heart of wildest Africa. For the less adventurous Moremi is best seen by vehicle safari and boat trips from the luxury lodges within the reserve.
