Mozambique
The Republic of Mozambique is located on the southeastern coast of Africa and covers a total area of 799 380 sq kilometres (308 641 sq miles). Mozambique has incredibly diverse and scenic landscapes and the locals are renowned for being the friendliest people in Africa. The country has some stunning natural attractions, offering 2 500 kilometres of unspoilt coastline and a string of sub-tropical Indian Ocean islands forming an idyllic archipelago. The country also boasts many stunning game parks, lakes, mountains and historical towns. With such diversity and natural splendour, Mozambique is a travel destination second-to-none.
Mozambique has had a turbulent history, from being explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498, colonization by Portugal in 1505, independence in 1975 and the subsequent civil war that ended in 1992. Mozambicans are putting their shattering past behind them and rebuilding their country at a remarkable pace. There's plenty to see, including stunning beaches and islands, a World Heritage site, charming colonial architecture and colourful local cultures, but get here soon before the tourist masses arrive.
The best times to visit are between May and November, when both rainfall and temperatures are at their lowest. It's also possible to travel during the early part of the warmer, rainy season from November to January (though be prepared for high temperatures, especially in January). If possible, avoid the height of the rains - from about February to March/April - as many roads become impassable and flooding is common in the south and centre. Around Easter, Christmas/New Year's and in August, Mozambique's southern coastal resorts become overrun with the vacationing neighbours and advance bookings are highly advisable.
